Why the double standards, Umno’s Puad asks PKR’s Hassan

PETALING JAYA: An Umno Supreme Council member has questioned the U-turn by PKR’s Hassan Karim on the possible impact on the current administration if Najib Razak were to receive a royal pardon.

In a Facebook post, Puad Zarkashi also asked why Hassan was practising double standards.

Hassan had on April 8 said Umno’s push to get the former prime minister pardoned would not cause cracks in the unity government.

However, two days later, Hassan said a pardon for the former Pekan MP would tarnish the image of Anwar Ibrahim’s government and would be detrimental to the PKR president.

Telling Hassan not to practise double standards, Puad asked: “When Anwar was granted a royal pardon, was it detrimental to the then (Pakatan Harapan) administration?”

Then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V granted Anwar a full pardon in May 2018, right after PH came to power.

Puad also questioned Hassan’s U-turn and wondered if the Pasir Gudang MP had implied that Anwar could influence the outcome of the bid for a royal pardon.

He said if Najib and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi were the issue, Hassan should have opposed the formation of the unity government, of which BN is a part of.

Last week, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party had asked the King to consider granting Najib a pardon.

Najib began serving a 12-year prison sentence on Aug 23, 2022, after he was found guilty of criminal breach of trust, power abuse and money laundering involving RM42 million in funds belonging to SRC International.

Najib said he would use the dissenting judgment by Federal Court judge Abdul Rahman Sebli to support his application for a royal pardon. - FMT
