PETALING JAYA: MIC has denied Selangor Perikatan Nasional’s claim that many of the Indian party’s members have quit to join the opposition coalition.
Party information chief R Thinalan said the number of party members who had left for PN “is in a single digit”.
“Where is the proof that MIC members have joined PN in droves? Do you (PN) have photographic evidence that you can share with us?” Thinalan asked in a Facebook post.
“There is no need to seek cheap publicity (just because) state elections are near.”
He said the majority of MIC members were still loyal to the party and believed in its advocacy for the Indian community.
Thinalan hoped PN was not engaging in “sweet talk” by claiming that it wanted to champion the Indian community.
Selangor PN yesterday claimed that numerous MIC members who disagreed with the party’s leadership, especially in Selangor, had decided to leave the party to join PN.
It said while the Indian community used to be a reliable vote bank for Barisan Nasional, the coalition’s fall in Selangor in 2008 had seen the party fall out of favour with the community.
Earlier this month, FMT quoted a source as saying that PN was forming an all-Indian committee fronted by former MIC leaders with a view of setting up a new single-race party within the opposition coalition.
The source said a “high-profile” person who left MIC recently was expected to head this committee. - FMT
