PSM's Arul to contest in Kajang, focus on restructuring the town

PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan will contest in Kajang in the upcoming Selangor state polls, the party announced this morning.

It would be PSM and Arutchelvan's first attempt at the constituency, which has a significant history of the party's struggles.

The veteran activist said he wants to focus more on town restructuring, which is what Kajang needs more rather than new development projects.

"Actually, Kajang is already quite a developed place. So our idea is not to make any more development in Kajang.

"What we need in Kajang is how to restructure this town. All the low-cost flats need to be taken over by the local council.

"There are also no housing projects that offer prices below RM100,000. So, we think, the only thing we want to do in Kajang is to improve housing and greenery around the area," he said in a press conference.

Elaborating further, Arutchelvan (above), better known as Arul, also believed that public transportation in the town should be improved.

While there have been services such as MRT and KTM Komuter, he said they do not reach certain parts of Kajang.

Many areas in the constituency had also been suffering from flash floods, which Arutchelvan vowed to address should he be given the chance to become a representative in the Selangor state assembly.

"There is an issue of drainage, where not enough funding was allocated. So, we will approach this kind of issue."

‘PSM can be a third voice’

Meanwhile, PSM chairperson Dr Michael Jeyakumar urged Kajang voters to vote for Arutchelvan so that the people will have a representative who can fight for their issues in the state assembly.

He said recent surveys showed that Pakatan Harapan will still rule Selangor after the state election, albeit at risk of losing some seats, and PSM can be a third voice in the assembly.

"So the question now is, don't we want to have one or two representatives from PSM and Muda to fight for issues that are important for the rakyat?

"Do we want to have a third voice who will fight for the environment? The voters here must be brave to choose," Michael added.

The Kajang seat is currently held by Harapan’s Hee Loy Sian.

Arutchelvan is the fourth candidate that PSM has announced for the state elections so far. They have earlier announced candidates for DengkilMeru and Kota Damansara.

PSM is partnering with Muda for the upcoming state polls as a third force against the Pakatan Harapan-BN pact and PN.

There are 56 seats in the Selangor state assembly, and so far, only Muda and PSM have announced some of their candidates ahead of official nominations on July 29. - Mkini
