MP urges cops to find missing Myanmar refugee activist, family

Selayang MP William Leong has urged police to urgently investigate the alleged abduction of Myanmar refugee activist, Thuzar Maung and her family from their home in Ampang Jaya on July 4.

Leong, who is also chairperson of the Parliament Special Select Committee for Human Rights, Elections, and Institutional Reforms, said a lack of positive results from the investigation will reflect poorly on the state of security in Malaysia.

"It was reported that Thuzar (above, right), her husband Saw Than Tin Win (above, left), daughter Poeh Khing Maung (16), and sons Thukha Maung (17) and Aung Myint Maung (21), got abducted by unknown persons from their residence at 26, Jalan UP 3/F Ukay Perdana, Ampang Jaya," said Leong in a statement today.

"Due to her being an activist with the Myanmar Migrant Workers Committee and her activity in promoting greater democracy in Myanmar, I am concerned that the abduction is related to her social and political activities on behalf of refugees, migrants, and the democracy cause in Myanmar.

"The event that took place in Kuala Lumpur has sent a chilling effect on the safety and security of an individual in this country, more so, a foreign individual," said the PKR lawmaker.

On July 17, Human Rights Watch in its report of the incident described Thuzar as an outspoken supporter of Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement.

On the alleged abduction, Human Rights Watch claimed that at about 4.30pm on July 4, a car with an unidentified driver and passengers had entered the gated community where Thuzar and her family lives.

The same car and two others owned by Thuzar’s family were purportedly seen leaving the compound nearly three hours later, and since then, the entire family have been uncontactable.

Commenting further, Leong said the right to security and the right to live without fear is a basic human right enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

‘Beef up security’

"Therefore, these rights should be protected, and our police and security agencies must take active steps to ensure the security of all - both foreign and locals in our country," he stressed.

It was reported that Thuzar fled Myanmar for Malaysia in 2015 to escape growing violence against Muslims.
