BN has gone to the Court of Appeal to nullify Pas president Abdul Hadi Awang’s victory in the Marang parliamentary constituency in the 15th General Election (GE15).
Counsel Mohamed Baharudeen Mohamed Ariff said Jasmira Othman, the BN candidate for the constituency, had on June 28 filed the appeal against the election court decision in Kuala Terengganu a day earlier.
On June 27, Judge Hassan Abdul Ghani of the High Court in Kuala Terengganu dismissed Jasmira’s election petition and ordered the petitioner to pay RM50,000 in costs to Hadi.
The petition was filed on Jan 3 at the Kuala Terengganu High Court per the Election Offences Act 1954.
Terengganu Umno chief Ahmad Said reportedly said among the points raised in the petition were allegations that PAS had bribed voters by distributing financial aid from the state government.
This was via the i-Pension, i-Belia and i-Student initiatives - between Nov 15 and 17 last year in the run-up to GE15.
In the election, Hadi retained his seat with a 41,729-vote majority, defeating three other candidates - Jasmira, Azhar Ab Shukur (Pakatan Harapan) and Zarawi Sulong (Pejuang).
Besides Marang, BN also filed election petitions to challenge the GE15 results for Kuala Terengganu, Kemaman, Gua Musang, Putrajaya, Masjid Tanah, and Segamat.
The political coalition succeeded in its election petition to nullify the GE15 results in Kuala Terengganu involving its lawmaker, Pas member Ahmad Amzad Hashim.
However, BN did not succeed in its election petition for Putrajaya. - Mkini
