Kuala Langat Amanah rejects incumbent rep from defending seat

Ahead of an official candidates announcement, the Kuala Langat Amanah division has declared objections against party incumbent, Hasnul Baharuddin from being fielded to defend the seat for a third term.

Kuala Langat Amanah chief Mohd Safiee Harun, in a statement also endorsed by the division's Youth, Women and Young Women's wings, said the time has come for the party to field a new candidate for the seat.

"We would like to stress that our objection comes because he (Hasnul) has served as Morib assemblyperson for two terms from 2013 until 2023.

"We take the stand that the party needs to field a new, fresh face with the ability to shoulder the responsibility to serve the people, more so in the nation's current more open and fast-changing political landscape," said Safiee.

"No individual should have the exclusive right to contest in any seat to the extent of denying talents of other individuals and giving them a chance to serve the people.

"Enough opportunity has been given to incumbent Morib assemblyperson Hasnul Baharuddin in the last two terms," said Safiee.

In November 2021, Kuala Langat police had probed Hasnul under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, as well as under the Domestic Violence Act 2017, based on a report lodged by a woman identified as his ex-wife, Juliani Jalilah Abdullah.

At the time, Hasnul claimed the alleged incident "never happened" and the report was lodged with "ill intentions" after their divorce.

Juliani, however, said she filed the report several months after the alleged assault.

It was to be submitted as a reference to the Kuala Langat Syariah Court that had validated Hasnul's divorce pronouncement made out of court via WhatsApp on Oct 14 of the same year.

Meanwhile, Kuala Langat district police chief Ahmad Ridhwan Mohd Nor confirmed the case has been classified as “no further action”.

"The case status has been NFA since last year," Ridhwan told Malaysiakini today.

The Kuala Langat Amanah division’s statement made no mention of Hasnul's case.

‘Two terms is enough’

When contacted, Safiee said he was not informed of any developments beyond media reports on the initial investigations.

He also said Hasnul's case was a "personal matter" to be deliberated by Amanah's leadership in making their final decision.

"Let him (Hasnul) answer to the leadership. That is up to the leaders' considerations.

"Our objection is because he has served as an assemblyperson for two terms," Safiee told Malaysiakini.

He added that the Kuala Langat Amanah division had submitted their preferred candidate's name to the party's Selangor leadership, which in turn, has submitted the state's list to the central leaders.

Earlier today, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said the party will hold a function on July 24 to announce the list of its candidates for the six state elections.

Previously, Selangor Amanah chairperson Izham Hashim confirmed that the party would contest nine out of the 56 state seats in Selangor. - Mkini
