New Penang ferries arrive at Butterworth Wharf

BUTTERWORTH: They're here at last – the four new ferries costing RM18mil each have arrived at Butterworth Wharf from Haiphong shipyard in Vietnam.

The ferries, named Teluk Kumbar, Teluk Bahang, Teluk Duyung and Teluk Kampi, arrived on cargo vessel MV Happy Star on Wednesday (July 5).

Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) chief executive officer Datuk Sasedharan Vasudevan said two ferries will be towed by tugboat to the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) on the island while the other two will remain on the mainland.

"They will begin operations at the upgraded Raja Tun Uda terminal on the island and Pengkalan Sultan Abdul Halim's new terminal on the mainland in August," he said.

PPSB has spent RM100mil in total for the new ferries and the terminal upgrades.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke is scheduled to board the new ferry at SPCT when he visits the terminal on Saturday (July 8). - Star
