No compromise with corrupt officers, says immigration DG

MACC is investigating allegations of corruption at KLIA involving the immigration department.

PETALING JAYA: The immigration department will fully cooperate in investigations concerning allegations of corrupt practices among its personnel, says director-general Ruslin Jusoh.

Ruslin said the department will leave it to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate these allegations.

“The department and the home ministry will not compromise with any officers found involved in corruption at KLIA or any immigration office nationwide,” he said in a statement.

Ruslin said the department maintained constant communication with MACC to facilitate a transparent investigation process without any external interference.

“The department will not protect officers found guilty and action will be taken against these officers,” he added.

MACC is investigating allegations of corruption at KLIA involving the immigration department.

On Friday, tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing admitted to being at the centre of a commotion with immigration officers at KLIA, where he attempted to intervene over a Chinese national who was allegedly prohibited entry into Malaysia.

Tiong alleged that immigration officers were asking for as much as RM3,000 to release those travellers they had detained, and an additional RM3,000 if they wanted to return to their home country immediately.

Earlier today, a source said MACC had recorded the statements of a minister and two Chinese nationals over the allegations.

The MACC source also said the anti-graft agency was tracking down an individual who acted as an agent and allegedly solicited bribes amounting to RM18,000 to resolve such cases.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said some national registration department employees were also being investigated after they allegedly demanded payments to issue certain documents, including those for citizenship. - FMT
