The National Registration Department (NRD) says it will not compromise on corruption.
This comes after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said yesterday that some personnel in the department were being probed for graft over alleged extortion when processing citizenship documents.
In a statement today, NRD director-general Zamri Misman gave the standard response that the department viewed such matters seriously and would not compromise with any of its officers found to be involved in corruption or abuse of power.
He also said the department was improving procedures in issuing identification documents.
The NRD is also organising programmes to strengthen the integrity of its officers while ensuring there is no room for misappropriation and abuse of power by “irresponsible parties”.
Meanwhile, Zamri (above) stressed that the NRD does not have agents or middle persons working for it.
“Don’t trust services offered by irresponsible parties who impose any charges,” he said.
Yesterday, Anwar said that a graft case involving the NRD had come to his attention.
“We should be facilitating the process for people who are eligible to be the country’s citizens and other things. However, these eligible applicants were imposed with another round of payment in order for them to obtain such a certificate,” he had said.
The prime minister also said that some immigration officers were also being probed for operating under the “old system and practices”. - FMT
