PM Lee orders minister to go on leave pending graft probe

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has ordered Transport Minister S Iswaran to go on leave pending a probe by the nation's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).

According to the CPIB, Iswaran (above) was assisting with investigations but could not provide further details. The bureau vowed to investigate the case "thoroughly with strong resolve".

"CPIB acknowledges the interest of the public in this case because a minister is being interviewed by CPIB. As investigations are ongoing, CPIB is unable to provide further details."

Lee, in a statement, said that he was briefed by the CPIB and sought his concurrence to open a formal investigation.

"I gave the director of the CPIB my concurrence on July 6, following which the formal investigation began on July 11," said Lee.

Lee said Senior Minister of State Chee Hong Tat will serve as acting Transport Minister.

Third high-profile probe

Iswaran is the third minister to have undergone a high-profile investigation this year after Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam and Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

Last month, CPIB cleared Shanmugam and Vivian of wrongdoings over their rental of two government bungalows on Ridout Road.

The bungalows were governed by the Singapore Land Authority, an agency under Shanmugam's ministry. - Mkini
