MCA's move to not contest in the upcoming six state elections is a "sacrifice" to alleviate the worsening racial tensions in the country, its vice-president said.
Ti Lian Ker claimed that the racial rhetorics spread by DAP and PAS to their respective supporters have polarised the country after the last general election.
"MCA is hated by non-Muslim voters who have bought into DAP's propaganda that Umno is a racist party.
"Now DAP is working with Umno and has made PAS their new target to frighten the non-Malay voters, especially the Chinese.
“This has caused racial and religious polarisation, with the Malays supporting Perikatan Nasional and non-Malays generally supporting Pakatan Harapan," Ti said on Facebook today.
"MCA believes this polarisation will continue and become worse as race and religion are exploited to create hate in the run-up to the state elections," he added.
To alleviate the situation, Ti said MCA decided to stay out of the elections and become the "bridge" between racial relations in the country.
"MCA's decision to not participate in the clash (polls) that weaponises race and religion can ease racial and religious tensions that are threatening the country."
Ti further called for a stop to polemicising race and religion to garner votes, as at the end of the day, the rakyat will be on the losing end, he added.
On Wednesday, MCA and MIC announced they will not contest in Aug 12 polls, however, they are prepared to assist coalition candidates.
BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said the two parties' decision was unlikely to be a boycott and that he will seek an explanation from them. - Mkini
