Tiong no-show at MACC headquarters, berates media

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing appears set to be a no-show at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya today.

The media have been waiting for the minister and the tourist he "rescued" from the KLIA last week since 8am, but have not spotted either of them.

They were supposed to be questioned by the MACC today over an incident at the airport, when the tourist - a China national - was denied entry.

Tiong claimed there was corruption involved in the incident, prompting a probe by the MACC.

Malaysiakini was made to understand that Tiong is not likely to turn up to meet the graft busters today.

Earlier, the minister also told the media off for waiting for him at the MACC headquarters.

"Why are you waiting there? Who asked you to wait? Go back. Go do something else more productive," he told NST.

"We want to resolve things in a nice manner. Why do you want to cause more damage," he added.

On Thursday, Tiong forced his way past immigration counters to “rescue” a tourist under detention.

The minister admitted his actions, which he said exposed corruption among officials in KLIA and that the Chinese national was not the first to receive such treatment when arriving in Malaysia.

After the woman - who worked for a Chinese government-owned TV station - was denied entry, her boss called the Malaysian consulate in Guangzhou, which then contacted Tiong.

The Immigration Department has lodged a police report over the matter, denying corruption.

According to Kosmo, the police report also stated that the woman was denied entry as she did not have a return ticket, and did not clearly state where she would be staying while in Malaysia. - Mkini
