PETALING JAYA: The prime minister needs to make regulatory changes to protect public lands in Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, says Selamatkan Kuala Lumpur.
The advocacy group proposed that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim tweak Rule 7 of the Planning (Development) Rules 1970 so that public consultation can begin early for any planned development and make it easy to identify projects that do not align with public interests.
This will serve as a safeguard against all kinds of projects inconsistent with city planning.
“Public land usage to date appears to have been optional and inconsistent,” the group said in a statement.
Aside from Rule 7, it is calling for better management of gazetting revocations and new reservations.
In recent years, group members had noticed that the attorney-general’s chambers had failed to issue gazettes after revocations had been finalised. They also had a hard time keeping track of legal notifications as well as finding precise locations of these plots of land.
The group urged the government to see the true value in public land, not just the price. It said public security or amenities and the expected quality of life should also determine property prices.
“Seen in this context, these lands can be so valuable as to be considered ‘priceless’,” the group added. - FMT
