BUTTERWORTH: PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad last night sought to allay any fears the Chinese community might have of the party, citing its 33-year rule in Kelantan.
Idris said in the over-three decades PAS had administered the east coast state, not a “single Chinese was killed” nor “an Indian had been beheaded”.
He said while non-Muslims made up less than 10% of the state’s population, they were able to live in harmony.
“Why? Because the Muslims know how to respect people. It is compulsory for Muslims to take care of non-Muslims.
“We can’t cheat them,” the former religious affairs minister said after Perikatan Nasional unveiled its candidates for the Penang state election here.
He was responding to claims by PN’s rivals, particularly DAP, that the Chinese community would face hardship if they were to ally themselves with PAS.
“Rest assured, PAS won’t oppress the Chinese,” Idris said.
His comments come a day after Selangor PN chief Azmin Ali said their rivals were pushing the “green wave” narrative – coined by certain parties to illustrate the political rise of PN – to scare Chinese voters from supporting the coalition. - FMT
