PETALING JAYA: A Selangor assemblyman from Perikatan Nasional has found an unlikely ally in DAP’s Marina Ibrahim, who defended his poster seeking donations in cash and kind for his service centre.
Without referring to Jefri Mejan specifically, she reminded Pakatan Harapan supporters not to forget the coalition’s past struggles. “When we are at the top (as the government), we cannot forget our roots and struggles,” Marina said in a Facebook post.
Marina is the Johor assembly member for Sudai, while Jefri, from PAS, is the assemblyman for Ijok, Selangor.
A check by FMT found that the post has since been taken down.
His poster requesting public donations had earlier received some backlash on social media as users questioned the initiative, while there were questions about the account used to make the posting.
Among those criticising the donation request was Twitter user @chairmanGLC said it was insane to ask for public donations to continue serving constituents, claiming that PN had already spent abundantly on past elections.
Meanwhile, another Twitter user, Syed Akramin, questioned Jefri’s need for public donations to fund his service centre, given that his wages are paid for with taxpayers’ money.
Meanwhile, flak was also levelled at the account used for the initiative, which is said to belong to the headmaster of a government school.
The education minister’s political secretary Atiqah Syairah Shaharuddin has since issued a letter to the head of the ministry’s integrity unit to probe the issue.
“The involvement of school administrators will impact school development and management,” Atiqah said in the letter. - FMT
