The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has given Gardenia Bakeries Sdn Bhd (Gardenia KL) until Oct 3 to explain a planned increase in the prices of 30 products.
Its deputy minister Fuziah Salleh said Gardenia KL was given six days to respond to the notice issued yesterday, following public speculations over the increase in prices.
"We will check every item and the reason given for the increase if they are using certain flour, their costs, transportation, their wholesalers and then (impact on) retail prices.
"So, we will know the entire supply chain and we can determine if there’s any profiteering.
"They were given six days and they have also issued a statement that the price of white bread will not be increased,” she added.
Fuziah (above) noted that the ministry has no power to stop Gardenia from raising the prices of its products.
"But we can get information and full explanation on reasons they increased the prices, and make sure there is no profiteering," said the former Kuantan MP who earlier launched a mobile ‘Jualan Rahmah’ at Pinggiran Putra flat, near Tanjung Lumpur in Kuantan.
Gardenia KL yesterday announced a price increase effective Oct 1 to a selected list of products, not including white bread as earlier speculated.
Among the products listed are Puazz Sambal Bilis, Puazz Sambal Mackerel, Puazz Kari Ayam, Quick Bites Butter Toffee, Quick Bites Red Beans, Quick Bites Cream Rolls, Numee Yellow Noodle and Numee Keluarga. - Mkini
