BUTTERWORTH: A former food handler at a nasi kandar outlet in George Town was fined RM20,000 when he pleaded guilty to attempting to defraud the restaurateur by promising to obtain a city council operating licence.

Jalil Ahmad Adam Mohamed, 53, admitted to having deceived Inamul Hassan Seeni Mohamed, 22, by falsely claiming that he could secure a Penang Island City Council (MBPP) licence for Inamul’s family restaurant for a RM50,000 fee.

He was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code for cheating.

According to the facts of the case, Jalil also told Inamul that part of the RM50,000 would be used to pay MBPP’s licensing officers to get it approved.

On Oct 17 last year, Inamul handed over RM50,000 in marked bills to Jalil at an apartment in Sungai Pinang, which led to Jalil’s arrest right after.

Jalil had been with the restaurant for five months.

In mitigation, Jalil, who did not have a lawyer, asked for a small fine as he was unemployed and was supported by his children.

Sessions court judge Zulhazmi Abdullah then fined Jalil RM20,000 in default six months’ jail. Jalil’s family settled the fine.

Deputy public prosecutors Noor Azura Zulkiflee and Afiqa Liyana Rozman prosecuted. - FMT
