McDonald's lodges police report after demand for sauce turns 'spicy'

McDonald's Malaysia has lodged a police report following a dispute with a customer over the chilli sauce supplied alongside its meals.

It claimed the customer became “extremely irate” and “verbally aggressive” towards its staff after an initial oversight, where the customer was unintentionally provided an inadequate amount of condiment.

It also voiced disappointment towards the customer for allegedly posting an inaccurate account of the Sept 22 incident that took place at the Taman Buaya drive-thru branch in Malacca.

“McDonald's Malaysia is deeply disappointed with the actions of the customer, who not only displayed aggression toward our staff but also posted inaccurate information about the incident on social media.

“We have reported this incident to the police to ensure the safety of our crew in light of the customer's aggressive behaviour,” it said in a statement today.

The company was responding to a Facebook post published on Sept 23, where a netizen posted a photo showing 10 packets of McDonald’s chilli sauce and a receipt for RM10.60 for the purchase.

“Life is getting harder! Even asking for extra sauce at McDonald’s would incur extra charges… Done 10 packets of chilli sauce for RM10.60.

“Congratulations to McDonald’s Ayer Keroh for taking proactive measures in line with the rising global price of rice,” the netizen wrote in a post that has since gone viral and was picked up by some news outlets.

McDonald's said it has launched an internal investigation that included a review of CCTV footage.

According to the company, the customer was initially provided with an inadequate amount of chilli sauce, and its staff promptly provided additional packets when requested by the customer.

“However, at that point, the customer became extremely irate and verbally aggressive toward our staff.

“The customer insisted on paying for an additional 10 packets of chilli sauce and urged our crew to issue a receipt for this purchase. Despite our crew's attempts to clarify that chili sauce is provided free of charge, the customer angrily insisted on being charged for the 10 packets,” it said.

It assured that it offers chilli sauce to all its customers at no additional cost. - Mkini
