A new mosque in Kuching will use English for Friday prayer sermons, said Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg.
"Soon we will build a new mosque near The Spring (mall)... We will request the Islamic Religious Department for the sermon during Friday prayers to be conducted in English.
"This will enable more people to understand the sermon, especially non-Malays who are Muslim and not fluent in Malay but more proficient in English," he said according to Borneo Post.
The new mosque will be located in Jalan Simpang Tiga and will involve the redevelopment of an existing mosque.
Abang Johari revealed this during the closing of the state-level Marhaban competition organised by the Sarawak Malay National Association in Kuching.
The premier said the number of Muslims in Sarawak had been increasing, based on the latest census findings. Among the factors that contributed to the increase include conversion to Islam for marriage or voluntarily after studying the religion.
"Previously it was about 27 percent to 28 percent, now it is at 34 percent which means the numbers have increased.
"The Islamic Information Centre at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee has played an important role as those who want to learn more about the religion can do so there," he added. - Mkini
