Zubir appointed Kedah speaker

 

Langkawi PAS chief Zubir Ahmad has been appointed speaker of the Kedah legislative assembly.

The Kedah state assembly also appointed Abdul Razak Khamis, who is the member for Sungai Tiang, as deputy speaker.

Zubir, who is not an elected member of the assembly, was the sole nominee for the speaker position.

Previously, the 60-year-old businessperson was PAS' candidate for the Ayer Hangat state seat (2008 and 2013) and the Langkawi parliamentary seat (2004 and 2018). He was unsuccessful in all attempts.

PAS heads the Perikatan Nasional coalition government in Kedah, which controls 33 out of 36 seats in the state assembly.
