Social media platform TikTok has denied accusations by the government that it was blocking content originating from Malaysia related to the Palestine-Israel conflict
Reuters quoted a TikTok spokesperson, who rejected the censorship claims made by Communications and Multimedia Minister Fahmi Fadzil yesterday.
“The claim is unfounded. Our community guidelines apply equally to all content on TikTok, and we’re committed to consistently enforcing our policies to protect our community,” the spokesperson reportedly told Reuters in an email.
Fahmi yesterday said there was “evidence” of TikTok allegedly removing pro-Palestinian content from Malaysia after numerous users of the platform complained to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) that their content and live broadcasts had been taken down or restricted.
He said such content included those related to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s speech during the Malaysia Stands with Palestine Rally on Tuesday.
Last week, Fahmi said he had contacted the operator of TikTok following complaints by netizens of alleged censorship of content related to the conflict in the Middle East.
According to Reuters, both Meta and TikTok designate Hamas - the Palestinian movement that governs Gaza - a “dangerous organisation” and ban content praising it.
Previously, Meta, the owner of popular social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, has also denied claims that it is blocking posts in support of Palestine. - Mkini
