MD of firm managing govt vehicles to be charged tomorrow

MACC is believed to have recorded statements from several key witnesses, including a former finance minister and individuals from the company, as part of its probe into the case.

PETALING JAYA: The managing director of the company which procures and manages the government’s fleet of vehicles will be charged with corruption tomorrow.

According to a source, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained permission to charge the businessman, who has a “Tan Sri” title, after he was investigated for allegedly submitting false claims.

It is understood that the anti-graft agency has recorded statements from several key witnesses, including a former finance minister and individuals from the company, as part of its probe into the case.

The source said the company previously secured a 15-year contract worth RM4.5 billion to supply and manage the government’s vehicle fleet until 2037.

When contacted, MACC senior director of investigation Hishamuddin Hashim said the suspect would be charged at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court tomorrow.

He also confirmed that the suspect had been investigated for allegedly submitting false claims under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.

In January, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that the anti-graft agency raided the home of a businessman with a “Tan Sri” title and his four companies.

The businessman served as the primary shareholder of the company responsible for supplying vehicles to the government.

Azam told The Star that MACC wanted to find out why the company was given the job to manage the government’s vehicles.

He also said MACC wanted to know why the contract given to another company was cancelled although it had received a letter of intent from the finance ministry.

Azam also said the anti-graft agency would call up a former finance minister to “shed light on the two questions” as well as a former prime minister “to determine if he was aware of the matter as it happened during his administration”. - FMT
