MACC confirms Perlis MB's detention despite PAS' denial

 

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli was “detained” despite PAS claiming otherwise.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, he said the politician was released on MACC bail after his statement was recorded in connection with an alleged abuse of power case.

“Yes, MACC detained Shukri for investigators to record his statement.

“Since his questioning has been completed, he has been released on MACC bail,” he added.

Earlier, PAS denied that Shukri (above) was detained with the party’s youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden asking if Malaysiakini’s earlier headline was aimed at creating a negative perception.

Taking to Facebook, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari accused Malaysiakini reporters of not having a “decent understanding” of Bahasa Melayu.

“Being summoned for investigation is not the same as being detained.

“Even a reporter is not well-versed in Bahasa Melayu, how could this happen? A reporter who communicates regularly in Bahasa Melayu should be able to differentiate between these two words,” he said.

Chronology of events

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that MACC had detained Shukri after summoning him to facilitate investigations into allegations involving the menteri besar and his son, who was arrested and remanded with several others last week.

Shukri had arrived at the MACC headquarters at about 10am.

Azam said the menteri besar was released after MACC was satisfied with his cooperation.

Last week, MACC arrested Shukri’s son and five others to assist in an investigation linked to the submission of false documents and claims involving RM600,000 over the past two years.

The case relating to document forgery to make false claims is being investigated after a project involving maintenance, repair, supply, and service works from 2022 until now, was not carried out.

Azam today confirmed that one of the cases being investigated included an alleged false claim for a supply of beverages for the raja of Perlis during the monarch’s stay at a hospital in the state. - Mkini
