MACC detains Perlis MB over alleged abuse of power

 

MACC has detained Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli this morning over alleged abuse of power, according to sources.

Malaysiakini learned that Shukri (above) was summoned to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to facilitate ongoing investigations related to his son, who had been arrested and remanded earlier.

When contacted, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that Shukri was at the MACC headquarters for questioning under Section 53(3) of the MACC Act.

"I can confirm that MACC summoned him (Shukri). He is at our headquarters now, where MACC officers are recording his statement in relation to allegations against him and his son," he told Malaysiakini.

When asked whether the menteri besar was under arrest, Azam said there was a possibility that Shukri might be held but said he could be released if MACC was satisfied with his statement.

"I do not rule out the possibility that he will be arrested under Section 53 of the MACC Act... if our investigators are satisfied with the statement he gives today, then he might be released on bail."

As of 1.32pm, the menteri besar was still at the MACC office giving his statement. MACC confirmed this as opposed to an earlier claim on Shukri's Facebook that he had been allowed to return home.

Last week, MACC arrested Shukri’s son and five others to assist in an investigation linked to the submission of false documents and claims involving RM600,000 over the past two years.

The case relating to document forgery to make false claims is being investigated after a project involving maintenance, repair, supply, and service works from 2022 until now, was not carried out.

Azam today confirmed that one of the cases being investigated includes an alleged false claim for a supply of beverages for the raja of Perlis during the monarch's stay at a hospital in the state.

Following his son's arrest, Shukri had told the Perlis state assembly that he was fine with MACC prosecuting his son if he was found to be involved in the alleged offences. - Mkini
