Mitra moved back to PMD, again

The Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) will be returned to the Prime Minister’s Department (PMD).

Government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said Mitra will reveal more details soon in a statement.

“It has been decided that the agency named Mitra will be returned to the PMD,” he told a press conference after the cabinet meeting today.

The decision was made by both National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Fahmi added.

Originally known as the Socio-Economic Development of Indian Community (Sedic), it was created in 2014 as a unit under the PMD during Najib Abdul Razak’s time in power.

After Pakatan Harapan formed the government in 2018, Sedic was renamed Mitra and transferred to the National Unity Ministry - where it remained until September 2022 before being transferred back to the PMD by then-premier Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Anwar Ibrahim administration kept Mitra under the PMD during its first year in power.

However, in December last year, it was announced that Mitra would again be parked under the National Unity Ministry.

Earlier, Aaron admitted to having a disconnect with the agency saying he did not have any stakes related to the agency before it was parked under his ministry.

KL20 summit

Meanwhile, Fahmi also announced the KL20 programme, which will be held from April 22 to 23.

The summit will highlight several aspects for start-ups, or companies that are about to start or have just started, especially in the field of technology, he said.

“More promotional material and space will be given for this programme. The cabinet understands there will be several important announcements, especially for what is called the start-up scene.

“The Economy Ministry will make more announcements or promotions regarding the summit after Aidilfitri,” he added. - Mkini
