Safe? Wait for our surprise, Hamzah tells 6 Bersatu MPs backing Anwar

Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin did not reveal the action that would be taken against the six MPs who backed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin has warned the six Bersatu MPs who pledged support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership that their positions are “not safe”.

The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has approved an amendment to Bersatu’s constitution which will allow the party to revoke their elected representatives’ memberships if they go against its stand.

One of the six Bersatu MPs, Suhaili Abdul Rahman, yesterday told FMT he would not have to vacate his seat as the amended constitution only took effect on April 1.

He pointed out that he and the five other Bersatu MPs had declared their support for Anwar between last October and January.

However, Hamzah told the Labuan MP that it was not up to the latter to determine whether the parliamentarians would have to relinquish their positions.

“He may claim they are safe, but it’s not up to him to decide,” Hamzah told FMT.

While Hamzah did not reveal what steps Bersatu would be taking against the six MPs, he stressed that they would be in accordance with the law.

“I won’t show them my cards,” he said.

The other MPs who had expressed their support for Anwar were Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli) and Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar).

All six MPs justified their support for the federal government by citing the needs of their constituencies.

However, they said they would remain loyal to Bersatu, which enabled them to circumvent a provision in the Federal Constitution which would have required them to vacate their seats for party hopping.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin previously said that under the amendment, a Bersatu MP or assemblyman would automatically cease to be a party member if he or she expressed support for any other party or policy that was not aligned with Bersatu’s position. - FMT
