KUALA LUMPUR: A dashcam video of motorists abusing the emergency lane to bypass traffic before being stopped by police has sparked a wave of online criticism.
The footage, recorded from a lorry, shows numerous cars and motorcycles using the emergency lane.
One car is seen swerving abruptly in front of the lorry to return to the main carriage, forcing the heavy vehicle to brake hard.
The video shows the lorry driver exiting his vehicle to confront the motorist.
The video drew criticisms from social media users who condemned the motorists.
"Now it is a trend to enter the emergency lane with hazard lights. After seeing the police, their hazard lights are turned off," user Shahazwanfahmy Je said.
User Puteri Diana said drivers are engaging in dangerous manoeuvres, such as weaving between lanes, specifically to avoid being fined.
Other social media users said that the Smart Lane initiative, where emergency lanes on certain highway stretches are temporarily opened to traffic, is being widely abused.
One user, Yusof Firdaus, criticised the system, saying it encourages motorists to use the emergency lane even when the Smart Lane is not activated.
Meanwhile, user Tok Janggut called for the total abolition of the initiative.
"To avoid the emergency lane from being misused, Smart Lanes should be abolished," he said. - NST
