A DAP lawmaker has urged the police to explain why no officers have been arrested yet over the Durian Tunggal shooting case despite the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) reclassifying it as a murder probe.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng questioned what the police were waiting for and warned that if they don’t act quickly in such cases, “history could repeat itself”.
“Two days have passed (since AGC’s directive), yet no officer has been arrested.
“The people don’t want history to repeat itself. The Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case proved that when authorities fail to act with haste, even a convicted man can escape to Australia and remain free.
“Now, the same script risks repeating itself in Malacca,” he said in a statement today.
On Nov 24, the police shot and killed three men, aged between 24 and 29, after one of them allegedly used a machete to attack a police officer in an oil palm plantation.
Malacca police chief Dzulkhair Mukhtar defended his team’s actions, alleging that the incident injured one of the officers.
However, lawyers representing the men's families rejected the police’s version of events, with counsel Rajesh Nagarajan urging that the police officers who fatally shot the trio be charged with murder.
Audio evidence
On Dec 6, the families of the deceased submitted an audio recording of the incident, which is said would debunk the police’s official version of what transpired.
According to their lawyer, N Surendran, the audio, which was recorded by the wife of one of the victims, is critical evidence that captures the final moments before the men were shot dead.
On Dec 16, the AGC instructed the police to reclassify the case as murder after examining a report submitted by the police.

Lim pointed out that in any murder investigation, the basic procedure involves arresting suspects for investigation.
“What are they (police) waiting for? Who are they trying to protect? The inspector-general of police cannot remain silent.
“The people demand answers, not excuses.
“The one who gave the order to shoot, the one who pulled the trigger and those attempting to cover up the matter must be identified and charged in court,” Lim stressed. - Mkini
