Army general lodges police report against Chegubard over allegations

KUALA LUMPUR: A senior military officer has denied a series of allegations circulating on social media and lodged a police report over what he described as false and defamatory claims.

Major-General Faridhulatroth Hashim said several Facebook posts published since Dec 31 last year by political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, contained serious accusations against him and were widely reshared online.

In a statement today, he said the allegations included claims of corruption, dishonesty, abuse of position, involvement in illegal financial dealings, misuse of public resources and participation in unlawful and "clandestine operations", including the alleged use of "safe houses" containing large sums of cash.

"I vehemently deny all these accusations. These accusations are nothing but false, malicious and defamatory and are aimed at tarnishing my reputation as a senior officer in the armed forces.

"I have carried out my duties as assistant chief of staff (intelligence) in Malaysia diligently, lawfully and with integrity," he said.

Faridhulatroth said he has lodged a police report pertaining to the allegations and has appointed law firm Messrs Hafarizam Wan & Aisha Mubarak to pursue further action.

He said a letter of demand (LOD) was issued to Badrul Hisham on Jan 13 and is currently pending successful service.

"I intend to take this matter to court as my reputation has been severely tarnished by Chegubard.

"I urge the public to refrain from sharing these contents from Chegubard as they are not only false but also the subject of a police investigation.

"I will not make any further comments at this time," he said.

In response, Badrul Hisham's lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali said they would wait for the LOD to be served.

"Anyone is entitled to take legal action. It is normal," he told the New Straits Times. - NST
