MACC gets greenlight to charge ex-military top brass

MACC has obtained consent from the attorney- general to prosecute former army chief Hafizuddeain Jantan and ex-armed forces chief Nizam Jaafar.

In a statement this evening, the commission said Hafizuddeain’s wife will also be charged.

The couple will face four charges each at the Kuala Lumpur Special Corruption High Court tomorrow under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001).

On Friday, Hafizuddeain (above, right) will face two additional charges under the same Act and section at the Special Corruption High Court in Shah Alam, while his wife will face an additional charge under the same Act and section in Terengganu next Monday.

Meanwhile, Nizam will face two charges under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 following investigations into abuse of power and inquiries involving the Armed Forces Welfare Fund, one charge of criminal breach of trust under Section 409, and one charge under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

He will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Special Corruption High Court on Friday.

MACC also revealed that the investigation into two other senior armed forces officers is now in its final stage, and the investigation papers are expected to be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor in the near future for further action.

‘Most understand their responsibilities’

Earlier today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasised that corruption cases should not compromise the overall integrity of the armed forces and other enforcement agencies.

“I would like to state that the integrity, commitment, morale, and resilience of our service personnel must not be undermined. The overwhelming majority fully understand their responsibilities.

“I do not want the misconduct of a small minority, although it is still under investigation and subject to court decisions, to tarnish the reputation, standing, (and) dignity of military officers at all levels who serve with professionalism and honour,” he was reported as stating.

Anwar also said that military and related security procurements will face stricter processes and heightened scrutiny under an urgent overhaul, in line with the newly launched Defence Industry Policy.

He added that the procurement freeze will remain in effect for the Defence and Home ministries, as well as other enforcement agencies. - Mkini
