Albert lodges police report against Azam over Sabah scandal, claims threats

Businessperson Albert Tei has lodged a police report alleging that former MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki had threatened and attempted to stop him from exposing the Sabah corruption scandal in November 2024.

The police report was lodged at the Presint 7 police station in Putrajaya this morning, a day after Azam left office.

Tei claimed he possesses complete documentary evidence, including a list of individuals with direct knowledge of the incident, as well as records of conversations via WhatsApp and other communication platforms with the relevant parties.

He alleged that the incident occurred on Nov 10, 2024, while he was in the process of exposing the corruption scandal involving 15 high-ranking Sabah politicians.

“The main reason I did not report this matter to the police or other authorities at the time was that I feared retaliation from Azam.

“At that time, he held the position of MACC chief commissioner, with significant influence and power to oppress me.

“Now, I’m coming forward publicly to confirm this matter in the interest of justice and transparency,” he added.

Tei himself was later charged with giving bribes following his revelations. He had since claimed trial to the charges.

Malaysiakini has contacted the police station, MACC, and Azam for comments.

Failed to lodge MACC report

Earlier, Tei also went to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya with two lawyers to lodge a similar report.

However, he did not proceed after alleging that only one of his lawyers was allowed to accompany him.

“I was informed that the investigating officer was a woman. So, I brought along a female lawyer because I would feel more comfortable lodging a report to a female officer if a female lawyer were present with me.

“So, we requested that I be allowed to enter together with my lawyer (Mahajoth Singh) and a female lawyer. However, MACC officers stopped us. They said only two people were allowed in.

“This makes no sense. What is wrong with bringing two lawyers along? Does it violate (their) SOP? When we asked, the officer said it was an instruction from higher-ups,” Tei told reporters today.

Meanwhile, Mahajoth said they did not lodge the report today as they were waiting for a written letter from MACC regarding the restriction on being accompanied by two lawyers.

“Is this an SOP or an instruction from their higher-ups?” he asked. - Mkini
