LIPIS: A BMW carrying five undocumented Myanmar migrants crashed into a water tank at KM23 of Jalan Lipis–Merapoh in Padang Tengku yesterday while fleeing a police roadblock.

The 45-year-old local driver and two Myanmar women were arrested, while three other migrants fled the scene following the 4.30pm incident.

Lipis police chief Superintendent Ismail Man said the luxury car driver, suspected of being a transporter hired to smuggle undocumented migrants, was carrying five Myanmar nationals, including three women.

"Upon arriving at KM28, the driver sped towards Lipis after realising there was a police roadblock. About 5km later, he is believed to have lost control of the car and crashed into a water tank near a food stall.

"The driver and two female passengers were injured in the incident and arrested. Three others, including a woman, fled the scene on foot," he said in a statement today.

Ismail said investigations revealed that the car was travelling from Kelantan to Kuala Lumpur and that police were tracking down the three suspects.

He said the driver is being investigated for careless and inconsiderate driving, obstructing a public servant, and transporting undocumented migrants.

The two Myanmar women arrested and the three migrants who fled the scene are being investigated for entering the country without a valid pass or permit. - NST
