Dr M reflects on idea to halt Lima; KJ wants govt to provide greater policy clarity for businesses

Lima

  • Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has weighed in on a minister’s proposal to halt the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima), asking if the yearly event was no longer a lasting brand name.

Stressing that it has nothing to do with his feelings, Mahathir noted the time spent boosting Lima’s brand globally, as shown by the presence of international defence firms at the exhibition.

“If we find there are shortcomings in Lima, then we should fix them. If there is a strong need for another related exhibition, but Lima is unable to accommodate it, a separate, more targeted exhibition should be organised,” he said in a statement on his blog yesterday.

Defence Minister Khaled Nordin reportedly said on Aug 30 that Malacca had the potential to be an alternative location for Lima if Langkawi is no longer suitable in the future. However, he added that the matter required further study from an infrastructure and investment aspect.

Governance

  • Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has called on the government to provide greater policy certainty to prevent financial markets and business activity from stalling around every electoral cycle, The Edge reported.

“Every time we get close to an election cycle, the economy grinds to a halt and asset allocation turns cautious. I want Malaysia to be a country where people are not frightened when a general election comes around - that is part of democracy.

“In most developed economies, it does not matter who wins: there is certainty for business, and the institutions are deep and strong enough to withstand the change,” Khairy reportedly said at a panel discussion in an investment forum in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He said Malaysia needed to assure investors and businesses that their money is safe and the rules are fixed, adding that the country has GLICs, regulators, and statutory bodies to ensure such continuity. - Mkini
