PETALING JAYA:
Melaka Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh has confirmed that state executive councillor Rais Yasin will contest the Sungai Udang seat in the upcoming Melaka state election.

Rauf said Rais, who is the incumbent Paya Rumput assemblyman, is the most suitable candidate to contest the Sungai Udang seat for BN, The Star reported.

According to Rauf, BN continued to serve Sungai Udang constituents, including attending to the needs of military personnel in the area, despite losing the seat in 2021.

Rais currently serves as BN’s Sungai Udang coordinator. He is also state housing, local government, drainage, climate change and disaster management committee chairman as well as Tangga Batu Umno chief.

Yesterday, Berita Harian reported that Sungai Udang and Paya Rumput were among several hot seats to watch for in the upcoming Melaka polls.

Berita Harian quoted a source as saying that a plan to move Rais from Paya Rumput would open the door for Pakatan Harapan, particularly PKR, to field a “heavyweight” candidate for the seat.

The source also suggested that Azman Abidin, the prime minister’s political secretary and federal territories PKR chief, was being considered for the Paya Rumput seat, although this has yet to be finalised.

In the 2021 Melaka election, Perikatan Nasional’s Dr Aleef Yusof won the Sungai Udang seat with a 530-vote majority, defeating BN’s Ali Mohamad, PH’s Hasmorni Tamby, and independent candidate Zahar Hashim. The seat is considered an Umno-BN stronghold.

On Friday, Aleef announced that he had left Bersatu to join Wawasan.

In the 2021 state polls, Rais wrested the Paya Rumput seat after winning with a majority of 629 votes. His challengers were PH’s Shamsul Iskandar Akin, PN’s Faris Izwan Mazlan, Putra’s Hashidi Zin, and independent candidate Jaini Dimon. - FMT
