Sitcom cast not involved in Onederful Malaysia CNY video, says Kok

DAP's Teresa Kok said today that none of the cast in popular Chinese sitcom 88 Kopitiam had acted in the Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014 video clip which has outraged the ruling Umno.
"I have checked with the actors and the actress concerned in my Onederful Malaysia video clip and found that none of them acted in the sitcom.
"Stop this desperate witch hunt," Kok said of the comedy series aired on national broadcaster RTM's TV2 channel.
As such, the Seputeh MP, who has been threatened with assault over her video clip, appealed to the national broadcaster to lift its suspension of the series.
She urged RTM to raise its level of professionalism to the standards of Britain's BBC and Australia's ABC network.
"Only then can RTM regain its credibility and support from the Malaysian public," she added.
Yesterday, Bernama reported that the sitcom has been suspended temporarily pending a probe into an allegation that one of its actors was part of Kok's video.
Broadcasting director-general Datuk Norhyati Ismail said RTM would call up the sitcom's producer soon to confirm the actor's involvement.
"This is to ensure that no party is abused or exploited by certain irresponsible individuals," she had said.
88 Kopitiam, which comes on the air every Monday at 7pm,  is a comedy-style series that touches on current issues affecting the Chinese community.
"RTM will not hesitate to take stern action against any actor involved with such programmes," she reportedly said.
On February 6, a group of Malay supremacists calling themselves "Council of Muslim NGOs" offered RM1,200 to anyone who would slap Kok, to show anger over the video which poked fun at BN leaders.
The protest also saw members of the group slaughtering chickens and smearing the animals' blood on a banner which featured Kok and other DAP leaders.
Despite police reports lodged by Kok and her supporters, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there was no need to investigate the matter.
"Slapping is not a threat. If they say murder, then it is a threat,” said Zahid.
