Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P Waythamoorthy will be resigning from all government posts as well as the Senate next Monday.
Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (PHM) adviser N Ganesan said this follows an unanimous decision by the central committee today.
According to Penang Hindraf, Waythamoorthy is to resign both as deputy minister and senator on Feb 10.
"This follows BN having failed to fulfill its promises in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) made between BN and Hindraf."
PHM had signed the MOU with BN prior to the May 5, 2013 general election where the ruling party had promised to resolve the chronic socio-economic problems afflicting the Indian community if BN returned to power with Hindraf's support.
In a statement, PHM secretary P Ramesh said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, during the MOU-signing, openly apologised for past BN lapses and promised actions to address them.
“These actions embodied in the MOU would result in permanent and comprehensive solutions to the problems of the Indian community. In addition, it was agreed in the MOU that a Hindraf representative would undertake responsibility to lead this complex task.
“It has been eight months since our chairperson Waythamoorthy took up the position within the government to lead the implementation. We have patiently worked with the PM to detail the MOU and to begin the roll-out of the programmes.
“In trying to do this, we have met with nothing more than an unending series of delays and dead ends. It is now clear to us that the PM and BN are not going to honour the MOU. They have neither the necessary political will, nor the courage to deliver on the promises in the MOU,” he said.
It was also reported last September that PHM had given red marks for the MOU's progress after Waythamoorthy's 100 days in office, where only one out of 32 areas had been attended to.
'A historic act of betrayal'
Ramesh described Najib and BN as having committed a historic act of betrayal to the Indian community by not honouring the MOU.
He said BN owes its loyalty to the Indian Malaysian poor, as almost 800,000 Indians from plantations were displaced since the 1980s and the poor had been denied adequate educational and economic opportunities to improve their livelihoods further.
Ramesh said PHM did the most unthinkable thing by signing a pact with its one-time nemesis, the BN, in the interests of the Indian poor with an honest belief that BN would fulfill its promises.
“We have now given up any hope of that happening. Hence, the PHM central committee has unanimously decided that Waythamoorthy tender his resignation from all government positions and the Senate on Monday, Feb 10,” he said.
“Our only regret is that we have not been able to deliver changes to the Indian poor, which we promised with this initiative. We sincerely apologise to them for the hopes we had raised,” Ramesh added.
