'Why Christians giving out BM leaflets in Selangor?'

Christian missionaries have been spotted in Pinggiran USJ in Subang Jaya distributing Bahasa Malaysia leaflets on the religion, says a blogger who is questioning their motives.

Abdul Karim Omar, who is also Muafakat Malaysia secretary-general, makes this claim in two different postings dated Jan 17 and Feb 21 in his blog akarimomar.wordpress.com.

In the Feb 21 posting, Karim says two foreigners were spotted distributing the BM leaflets in USJ, Selangor.

“They (one of the volunteers) claimed they were only distributing the leaflets to Chinese and Indians, but when asked why the article is printed in BM, they could not answer,” claimed the blogger.

Karim also claimed the earlier incident took place on Jan 17 at Taman Seri Telok Datok in Banting, Selangor, where a group went house-to-house to meet the residents there.

According to him, some residents eventually stopped them, and the group members felt uncomfortable and left the area in three cars.

The blogger also posted images of the two-page flyer, published by a Christian group in New York City and printed by a company based in Puchong.

The flyer titled 'Semua penderitaan akan berakhir tidak lama lagi’ (All sufferings will end shortly) bears the disclaimer 'Christian publication' on its cover.

It also claimed to have drawn its contents from the Bahasa Malaysia Bible Al-Kitab, which is used by Malay-speaking Borneo Christians.

'Why Bahasa Malaysia?'

Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) picked up on the blog posting and wanted to know why Bahasa Malaysia was being used.

“When asked why the leaflet was in BM and whether they could converse in BM, it is clear they could not give a reply,” claimed Isma.

However both the blogger and Isma did not elaborate on their objection.

A Selangor enactment stipulates that it is an offence for other religions to be propagated to Muslims in the state.

The federal constitution guarantees the right to freedom of religion, and the recent row over the use of the term 'Allah' by Christians in Sabah and Sarawak has also spotlighted the fact that Bahasa Malaysia is being used by some Christian communities in their religious practice.

Article 11 of the federal constitution, which relates to freedom of religion, states that every person has the right to profess and practise his religion and, subject to Clause (4), to propagate it.

Clause 4 states that state law, and federal law in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, may control or restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam

Article 11 further states that every religious group has the right to manage its own religious affairs; to establish and maintain institutions for religious or charitable purposes; and to acquire and own property and hold and administer it in accordance with law.
