KUALA LUMPUR - The electoral reform movement Bersih has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to begin investigations into Genting Bhd and its directors, in the wake of a news report which claimed that government funds had been channelled to the Barisan Nasional’s 2013 general election campaign.
Bersih said in a statement the Wall Street Journal report was shocking and “a revolting truth” about how the general election was “stolen from the people”.
The Wall Street Journal said the government-owned 1Malaysia Development Bhd had made an overpriced purchase of a power-generating company from Genting Group in 2012, which then made a donation to a foundation controlled by Najib and the funds used for the general election campaign.
It said the report implied that 1MDB may be used as a government-controlled election slush fund for Umno campaign purposes, and asked if any other government-controlled money had been used in a similar manner.
“The prime minister must refute this report or resign, otherwise he loses his legitimacy to stay in power,” Bersih said.
The group urged the MACC to investigate the report as well as the prime minister and all those involved including Genting Bhd directors. - FMT
