Penang gov't sacks PAS councillors

The DAP-led Penang government today sacked PAS councillors who have yet to resign following the dissolution of Pakatan Rakyat.

Penang exco-in-charge of local government Chow Kon Yeow said the two PAS representatives whose terms were terminated were Yacoob Omar from the Penang City Council and Omar Hassan from the Seberang Perai Municipal Council.

"The state secretary has sent the letters informing them of their termination effective yesterday.

"Before this, Yacoob (photo) and Omar were appointed as councillors based on nomination by PAS in January," he said in a statement.

Two other PAS councillors, namely Mhd Nasir Yahya and Dahalan Fazil, had quit before hand.

They followed in the footsteps of leading PAS progressive leaders Mohamad Sabu and Mujahid Yusof Rawa who quit their government posts in Penang after being purged from the PAS leadership.

Dissolution of the coalition

PAS, under its new leadership comprising conservative hardliners, had passed a motion proposing the severing of ties with DAP.

This prompted DAP to declare Pakatan dead and PKR subsequently acknowledged the dissolution of the coalition.

Last Sunday, Penang PAS secretary Mohd Fadzil Kemi was also sacked from his post as a Grade S41 information officer in the chief minister's office.

However, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced today that PAS' sole state assemblyperson Salleh Man (photo) will remain in the government.

Salleh, who is PAS Permatang Pasir assemblyman, currently holds the post as Penang Islamic Affairs Council president, and sits on the board of Yayasan Islam Pulau Pinang and Penang International Halal Hub.
