Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir has denied reports in the media and pro-government blogs that he had been asked to resign from his post by the Kedah Regency Council.
"Allegations by the mainstream media and pro-Najib blogs that I have been asked by the Regency Council to resign by signing a letter but I did not sign following two requests are mere lies," he said in a posting on the Mukriz Mahathir FC Facebook page.
Mukhriz is currently facing a crisis of confidence after Kedah deputy Umno liason chief Ahmad Bashah Mohd Hanipah led 14 assemblypersons in claiming he does not have the support of BN assemblypersons in the state.
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak met the Yang di Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim, who is also Kedah Sultan on on Jan 27 to discuss the matter.
Najib also met the Regency Council two days later and following that the council met with BN elected representatives but there was no decision made. The council is meeting opposition assemblypersons today.
Meanwhile. PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in a statement said the party accepts the constitution as right in deciding who is the Kedah MB based on the person who has the confidence of the majority.
"Any decision to remove the present MB must be based on a valid reason. In the case of Kedah, there is no logical reason which has been made to warrant Mukhriz's sacking as the state MB except for competition within Umno's politics."
Based on this, said Wan Azizah, the party would continue to support the existing administration under Mukhriz. -Mkini
