MP urges RCI after ex-DPM claims criminal evidence in SRC case

Parti Amanah Negara’s Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin has urged the setting up of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) into the RM42 million from state-owned SRC International deposited into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal bank accounts.
This was after former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday claimed he was briefed by former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail and presented with evidence that showed a “clear criminal act” in the case.
In light of this, Hanipa said the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should summon Muhyiddin, Abdul Gani as well as the new attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali, who cleared Najib, for questioning.
However, Hanipa noted that even if the investigating agencies do initiate the probe, they are unable to submit the investigations to Apandi who himself will be a subject of investigation.
“Therefore Amanah would like to propose that an RCI be set up to immediately investigate Muhyiddin’s latest revelation in a manner that is detailed, transparent, in-depth and without fear or favour.
“It must comprise member who are truly independent and with integrity so that the truth can be uncovered,” he said in a statement today.
Both Muhyiddin and Abdul Gani were removed from office after Najib initiated a move to consolidate his position in July last year.
Abdul Gani’s replacement, Apandi, had cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in the RM42 million case as well as another deposit of RM2.6 billion from an offshore company.
In clearing Najib, Apandi said the RM2.6 billion was from an Arab donor and the remainder of the money had been returned.
As for the RM42 million from the state-owned company, Apandi said Najib had no knowledge that the money had gone into his personal bank accounts as justification for not prosecuting the prime minister.
Najib had consistently denied any wrongdoing, but the MACC is appealing the decision not to prosecute. -Mkini
