Tian Chua slams police for power abuse over taxi drivers' arrest

PKR's Batu MP Tian Chua slammed the police for abusing their power by detaining for one night five taxi drivers who staged a protest in Bukit Bintang earlier today.
"They were merely having a strike without flashing their placards and chanting slogans, and they were arrested.
"They were not told what wrong they have allegedly committed. And they were denied access to legal aid as they were told they can only see their lawyers after they meet the investigating officer (IO)," he added.
Thus, the police has abused its power by denying their basic rights, Chua (photo) said.
"The IO has yet to show up at the Jinjang lock-up centre by 5pm," he said, adding that his attempts to visit the arrested taxi drivers were denied by the police.
According to Chua, the cops then decided that the five should stay overnight in the police lock-up.
However, they were able to brief Chua and a group of taxi drivers through the fences of the lock-up centre.
Approximately 80 taxi drivers turned up to show their support.
Meanwhile, the Dang Wangi district police chief Zainol Samah said the five were arrested for obstructing the police officer from performing their duties.
"They were told to disperse. Deputy OCPD Habibi Majinji tried to negotiate with them but failed," he said in a statement today.
"Five males in their 30s to 50s were arrested, and two taxis were confiscated."
Earlier today, a group of 300 taxi drivers occupied Jalan Bukit Bintang to protest the government's inaction against ride-sharing service Uber and GrabCar.
They police issued an ultimatum for them to disperse and arrested five protesters after they insisted on staying at the protest spot. -Mkini
