Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar today confirmed that Pahang mufti Abdul Rahman Osman will be investigated for sedition over his kafir harbi remarks against the DAP and non-Muslims who purportedly opposed Islam.
"Police have received two reports on June 26. One in Penang and the other in Dang Wangi.
"We have opened investigations under the Sedition Act so allow us to investigate," Khalid told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Abdul Rahman was quoted by Utusan Malaysia last Friday as likening the DAP to kafir harbi or non-Muslims who opposed Islam and as such are permissible to be killed.
He later defended his statement but clarified it was not just directed towards the DAP but all who opposed Islam.
'Cease further comments'
Khalid also urged all parties to cease making further comments on the issue as it is a sensitive matter.
"Stop making comments linking the mufti's statement with IS and with the attack in Movida.
"Stop all this because it is not good for our multiracial and multi-religious country. This is a sensitive matter, let us do our duty and investigate," he said.
Khalid also took a swipe at the Council of Churches who he said, had implied the authorities were not taking any actions against Abdul Rahman.
"If there is enough evidence, we will forward it to the AG who will take the next course of action.
"In the month of Ramadan, we have been advised that we should not talk a lot or make comments that can offend the feelings of others. We should not make comments that can affect other races and culture."
CCM general-secretary Hermen Shastri in a statement today had described Abdul Rahman's claims as one of the most divisive and provocative statements made by a state official, creating suspicion and disunity in a multiracial society. - Mkini
