Semporna Umno: How many members actually quit?

Confusion has arisen as to how big yesterday's mass resignation of Semporna Umno members actually was.
News reports yesterday cited then division vice-chief Jaujan Sambakong as saying that 300 division members including himself, and the leaders of Semporna's Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings had quit the party.
This was to protest the suspension of Umno vice-president and Semporna chief Shafie Apdal.
Bugaya assemblyperson Ramlee Marahaban, however, said that only about 50 Semporna Umno branch leaders had turned up for the event, and not all were aware of the plan to quit the party.
"Most of them did not know about the announcement to quit the party," Ramlee was quoted as saying by Bernama.
The national news agency also reported that Semporna Puteri chief Zakiah Kalipunya had not quit the party.
When contacted, Jaujan said Ramlee and Zakiah were trying to cover up the gravity of the situation.
"They are trying to hide the truth. Ignore them. Their politics is about themselves and not the rakyat," Jaujan told Malaysiakini.

He also said that photographs from the event clearly showed how many people had showed up to protest Shafie's suspension, and that those in attendance were fully aware of what was going on.
"The branch leaders knew beforehand and wanted to protest the supreme council's decision to suspend Shafie and were prepared and willing to quit Umno."
Shafie was suspended last Friday, while Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir were sacked from the party.- Mkini
