IGP SAYS CAN’T ARREST ANANDA KRISHNAN, ASTRO CEO WANTED BY INDIA

Corporate And Media Leaders Attend Allen & Company Media And Technology Conf.
(MMO) – Malaysian police can’t execute the warrant of arrest issued by India for Tan Sri T. Ananda Krishnan and Ralph Marshall, the chief executive of Astro All Asia Networks, as there is no legal agreement to do so, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.
The Malaysian telecommunications tycoon and Marshall are both sought after by Indian authorities to testify in a money-laundering case against the republic’s former telecommunications minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi Maran related to a 2006 Aircel-Maxis deal.
“No, we do not have any agreement with India that we can execute their warrant of arrest. No, we cannot do that,” he replied reporters when asked if Malaysian police would act on the Indian arrest warrant.
Earlier today, The New Indian Express reported that India’s Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) was seeking arrest warrants for Ananda and Ralph Marshall for the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case involving ex-Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi Maran.
CBI reportedly said that they were seeking arrest warrants as the summons had not been served on the accused.
The Indian news portal also reported that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in May had issued a summons under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to examine Ananda Krishnan and Ralph Marshall, both of which were sent to Malaysia’s Home Ministry.
