Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak today urged the people to celebrate National Day in the spirit of togetherness regardless of their racial and religious differences.
He said this was in keeping with the National Day theme of 'Sehati Sejiwa' (One Heart, One Soul) which reflected the unity of Malaysians irrespective of their different political leanings and ideologies.
"This is a day we must uphold as one that really unifies us. We should also be grateful that our country is peaceful.
"We should continue to go forward to build for ourselves a more glorious Malaysia," he told reporters after watching the full dress rehearsal of the 2016 National Day parade at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur.
The 2016 National Day is celebrated on Aug 31 nationwide, with the national-level celebration held at Dataran Merdeka.
The theme of 'Sehati Sejiwa' has been retained for 2016 to maintain the spirit of unity that had long been cherished by Malaysians.
Almost 15,000 people representing government agencies, the private sector and the security forces as well as students took part in the full-dress rehearsal.
Replying to a question, Salleh said he was satisfied with the event and expressed the hope that the participants would maintain the momentum in the spirit of working as one team.
"Such a spirit can be translated into a great display for the people," he said.\
He also called on the people not to miss the opportunity to watch the event at Dataran Merdeka on Wednesday.
"Come dressed in colourful attire, with the theme of the Jalur Gemilang (national flag). Show your spirit of patriotism. This is the key to everything," he said.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's Department senior deputy secretary-general Othman Mahmood said the full-dress rehearsal showed that there remained some aspects that had to be improved.
"We have one more day to touch up on any shortcomings so that on Aug 31 we will give our best presentation," he said.
Othman advised all participants to get sufficient rest tomorrow.
