PETALING JAYA: DAP lawmaker Tony Pua has remained resolute in not removing a Facebook posting in which he named Prime Minister Najib Razak as ‘Malaysian Official 1′ despite being grilled by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today.
According to a report in news portal Malaysiakini, Pua, a vocal critic of Najib and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), was questioned for an hour at the MCMC’s headquarters in Cyberjaya under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia (CMA) Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services.
Pua, who is MP for Petaling Jaya Utara, was accompanied by his lawyer Gobind Singh Deo, and told reporters later that MCMC received at least five complaints over two Facebook postings of his, made in the wake of the United States’ Department of Justice’s (DoJ) lawsuits pertaining to 1MDB.
“I will not remove my postings, and as an MP, I ask the government to be accountable on 1MDB. I will continue to press for those guilty to be charged,” Pua said, adding the MCMC should focus on other more pressing issues.
Last month, the DoJ filed lawsuits, alleging that over USD3.5 billion had been misappropriated from 1MDB.
The DoJ alleged the offences were committed over a four-year period and involved multiple individuals, including Malaysian officials and their associates, who conspired to fraudulently divert billions of dollars from 1MDB.
It specifically named Riza Aziz, who is Najib Razak’s stepson, Low Taek Jho (better known as Jho Low), Abu Dhabi government officials Khadem al-Qubaisi and Mohamed Ahmed Badawy Al-Husseiny, as well as an unnamed Malaysian official known as ‘Malaysian Official 1.’
