This mess has affected morale, rues KL mayor

Since last week, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
With the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) dragnet targeting officers from top to bottom, mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz is concerned about the impact.
“I don’t want to comment,” Amin Nordin told the New Straits Times when quizzed on the probability of MACC hauling up some 30 more DBKL officers for questioning.
“This whole mess has affected the morale of our staff,” he said.
Meanwhile, MACC director of investigations Azam Baki, who said that corruption in DBKL could be occurring at an unprecedented scale, wants to work with the local council to plug loopholes in their standard operating procedure (SOP).
“Part of our investigation is to look into the real issue, that is how these people managed to get such deals.
“We welcome the mayor’s willingness to cooperate with MACC to look into City Hall’s SOP and the departments’ integrity,” Azam was quoted as saying.
Azam also revealed that since MACC arrested the DBKL executive director with the 'Datuk Seri' title, members of the public have been sharing information to assist in the investigation.
“Ever since the story about this Datuk Seri’s arrest was published, we have been getting many complaints and information from the public on the issue.

“I am very thankful to the people for giving us the extra information, which will help us with our investigation,” he said.
The MACC suspects that DBKL officers of various ranks were forcing developers to deal with DBKL for various approvals to get free condominium units, which were later sold at higher prices.
“Our investigations revealed that no less than 30 City Hall officers obtained condominium units through corrupt ways and without making any advance payments,” he said. - Mkini
