Warisan: Sabahans deserve recognition and development too

Sabahans’ aspiration to develop in parallel with their fellow Malaysians in Peninsular Malaysia has failed to materialise, said Parti Warisan Wira information chief Francis Au.
“In the beginning, everything was fine, but unfortunately in the '70s, we lost more and more special privileges, and Sabahans' aspirations to develop along with our partner the Federation of Malaya has not been achieved until today,” he said in a press statement today.
The rights of Sabahans in Malaysia is actually guaranteed through the Malaysia Agreement 1963, he said.
That is what Warisan is fighting for, he said, to ensure that Sabah is recognised as a sovereign territory by the ‘Malayan Federation’ and that their rights as stated in the Malaysia Agreement are respected and implemented without compromise.
He also lamented that there was no definition of the "National Day" in the Federal Constitution of Malaysia, though "Independence Day" refers to August 31, 1957.
“This is what happens when the Malayan Constitution is adopted as the Malaysian Constitution,” he said.

However, he said, Sabah and Sarawak are partners with Peninsular Malaysia and it is no big deal for Sabahans to accept and respect the independence of Malaya.
“There is no problem for us to wish Happy 60th Independence Day specifically to Malaysians in (peninsular Malaysia) and Malaysia in general, just as Sabahans want to be respected by their partners,” he said.
As such, he said, Warisan urged for a 'National Day' to be included in the Federal Constitution, apart from Malaya’s Independence Day, which is celebrated every Aug 31.
Malaysia Day is celebrated every Sept 16. -Mkini
