Attorney-general (AG) Mohamed Apandi Ali has again directed the police to further investigate the 1MDB fund scandal on Oct 24, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said.
This is the second time in four months that the AG has rejected the police’s investigation paper into 1MDB.
“The further investigation in relation with 1MDB is still ongoing based on the instruction by the attorney-general on Oct 24,” said Azalina (Umno-Pengerang) in a parliamentary written reply.
“Thus, any revelation on the details of the investigation can affect and cause a prejudice to the ongoing investigation effort by the police and the matter should be respected by all parties,” she said.
She was responding to Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) who asked the status of the 1MDB probe and if any delay existed in the process.
On April 12, the then inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar claimed the police have completed their probe into the state-owned entity and submitted the investigation paper to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
Khalid, however, claimed in June that AG had instructed police to further probe the issue. He also stated that as it was a civil case, “police would not interfere.”
Last month, newly minted police chief Mohamad Fuzi Harun said there was no need for police to probe the matter.
“No, no. We have no need (to investigate further), as the investigation has been completed.
“Unless we have further instructions from the PAC or cabinet on this matter,” Fuzi said at a press conference on Sept 20.
